Question of the day...

You wake up in the morning to realize you dont have any clean underwear and little time to wash some. Do you:
A. Wear dirty undies that day.
B. Go commando that day.
C. Wash some knowing they wont have ample time to dry and wear wet undies that day.
D. None of the above.

What do you do?

I cant belive people feel this conversation is necessary

I cant believe people feel the need to have a three hour conversations about wheather or not Rob Bell is a Christian.

Seriously dont you have something better to do?

Advent conspirecy

Hey yalls, I wanted to let you in on a really cool organization that our Church is partnering with this year, and from here on out. The organization is called Advent conspiracy, and the partner with an organization called Living Water International. Their main goal is to end the clean water crisis, and are well on their way do putting a huge dent in it.

Have a look at this Video and see what you feel led to do.

So how does hiltler feel about the great emergence?

While I agree with Doug Padgett that is may be a little to early to start making Hitler jokes. I did find this to be very funny. If you keep any tabs on Emergent Village in the slightest bit you will too.

Are we done emerging yet?

When is the Church no longer emerging? When have we emerged? Because once we emerge we can actually get a name right?

If you haven't thought about it the Church has gone though "emergances" about every 500 years. Think about it, 500 years ago the reformation, 500 years before that the Great Scism, 500 years before that the council of Chalcedon, and so on. Every 500 years it seems that the Church rethinks where its going. As of right now we are in the middle of that rethinking.

But these are some questions I've been working though as of late. At what point are we no longer in this transitional period? And, are we ever out of it for that matter? Further, are we going to name this movement outside of "emergent" or "emerging". Because if you think about it "emergent" and "emerging" are transitional words for something that is coming into a state of being. When have we reached that state?

Its interesting because we try to label the "emerging church" but in reality we cant label it in terms of styles, because the emerging church is so diverse in its stylings. That is what makes this movement so different from movements of the past. We are no longer concerned with finding a cookie cutter church model that fits in all areas, but more focused on bringing the kingdom of God into our contexts. That looks different in every area geologically and sociologically. Maybe we should be calling this the "ecumenical movement" or "the really diverse movement with no real name".

With that said I do recognize that there are some values that more emergent people share. Such as a greater sense of community, acceptance, kingdom mentality, and recognition of social injustice. At the same time we are really diverse because we have people like Mark Driscoll, and then people like Rob Bell. Both considered emergent but very opposing in thought.

So what do you think? When have we arrived? Do we ever really arrive? What should this movement be called?

Happy Birthday

Im Feeling Better

Im sure those of you who dont follow me on twitter or another social network have been wondering where the heck I am.

Well I am alive and kicking. I was in the hospital for 5 days being treated to viral meningitis. What that is im still not totally sure. It has something to do my brain being infected. Really not all that good.

Anywho, all in all im feeling better. I still get really tired really easy and my back hurts like heck. While I was in the hospital I had to have two spinal taps (freaking sucked). That could have something to do with it.

Anyway, I am back at home, and I am feeling better.

Thanks for all the prayers, and encouraging words.

Should I start One of These?

Thanks to Kevin for posting this. Im seriously considering starting something like this in Spmo.

Heres to a good week....

Why Belive In God? Just Be Good For Goodness Sake'.

This picture came from a AOL news article. A spokesmen for the group said "We are trying to reach our audience, and sometimes in order to reach an audience, everybody has to hear you. . . . Our reason for doing it during the holidays is there are an awful lot of agnostics, atheists and other types of non-theists who feel a little alone during the holidays because of its association with traditional religion."

Do you think its because Christians have made them feel unwelcome? If any of you are atheists, agnostics, or a non-theist in general chime in I want to know what you think too.

Here is a link to the original article.

Guest Writing: I Have A Dream

This is a note written by Steve Smallwood, one of my professors, whom I have the utmost respect for; often times he is a breath of fresh air.

This is a dream shared by me I am praying for it to become a reality.

I Have a Dream

It’s based not just on the American dream,
And it goes beyond justice related to skin color,
Though who could not be moved at the tears
Streaming down the cheeks of black men and women.

I have a dream that transcends ethnic differences,
One that moves beyond the divisive issues of yesterday’s battles,
And calls on citizens red and blue to beat their tired rhetoric
Into plans for action to address issues of significance.

My dream envisions Christians who would embrace the Kingdom,
Above and beyond any denominational or national loyalties.
It challenges the close-minded simplicity that requires large blocks of Truth
To be defined by and contained within small cranial cavities.

I have a dream that is based in the example of Jesus,
Who endured ridicule and refused to throw stones
At those who were beset with the legacies of sinful lifestyles
In order to deliver refreshing living water to their parched spirits.

My dream yearns for true believers to set aside,
Partisan politics and theologies of left versus right,
To not just oppose abortion but to truly cherish and nurture life
And to love God and others just as we ourselves want to be loved.

It’s a dream that refuses to divorce the gifts of the Spirit,
From the fruits of the Spirit—especially goodness and gentleness,
Toward those we disagree with—even our enemies,
Who we are called by Jesus to love—because they need it most.

There are days when I fear my dream is merely a vapor,
When I find myself at odds with the din of the crowd,
Then I remember that Jesus said we're not to travel the well-worn path,
But instead to listen with discernment to his small voice and follow his costly example.

By Steve Smallwood.

White, Black, Purple, Blue, Pink, or Rainbow...

It does not matter what color you are, political party you find yourself in, state you reside, or religion you profess. The United States made History last night. The election of Barack Obama is proof of progress. Something that could not have happened 50 years ago, happened. After years spent fighting for equality, it has been realized. Countless amounts of blood, sweat, and tears were shed for a night like last night. A night that proved anything is possible, for anyone...

Go vote if you haven't... I dont care who you vote for, just vote with your head.

Five Reasons to Vote For Barack Obama, From A Christian's Perspective

With all the fuss associated with followers of Jesus voting for the democratic nominee I thought that I would post some reasons why I, as a Christ follower feel we should consider Obama.

1. War in Iraq- This is one of the many reasons Conservatives are shying away from a endorsement of Obama. I on the other hand, believe that it is time we pull out of Iraq and start to focus on other nations of threat.

Why Do I believe this? I believe this because during this war there have been hundreds of thousand lives lost. The lives lost in this war stretch far beyond troops to innocent civilians. As a person who values life I believe we cannot put anymore lives at risk.

2. Abortion- My view on abortion is much more moderate than most evangelicals, I see that simply holding a pro-life or pro-choice stance does absolutely nothing to help the situation. One thing many people neglect is that fact that neither pro- choice or pro-life advocates want abortion to happen on a large scale as it is.

As far as Obama's and McCain's plans go. I believe that Obama's plan will aid in the reduction of abortions more than McCain's will. His plan to make adoption more viable, educate women/ men on safe sex, and assist young mothers and families will reduce abortion rates.

On another note: Under Bush the teen pregnancy and abortion rate has gone up to record levels. This should be enough evidence that simply being Pro-life is not enough.

3. Homosexuality- As a Christian, while I believe homosexuality is a sin, I also understand that "we all fall short of God's glory" and are all sinners. Furthermore, I believe in equality. The Homosexual community should not be punished simply because of life choices.

It is ridiculous that Homosexual partners are denied the right to share health insurance, visit each other in the hospital, buy a home together, or even somehow recognize their commitment to each other.

Now, at the same time, I do not support changing the definition of marriage, neither does Obama, but it is only fair that their realationship is recognized and valid.

4. Energy- It is important that we begin to take steps to move away from fossil fuels that produce carbon emissions. It is also important that we begin to research cleaner alternative energy options to power not only our cars but also our buildings.

We are called to take care of the environment we were given. It is our responsibility to do so.

Not only does Obama's plan seek to cut our dependence on foreign oil that feeds the terrorists who are seeking to destroy us, but it also will create thousands of new jobs, stimulating our economy.

5. Health care- We live in the most prosperous nation in the world but nearly half of our citizens are uninsured. This, for the most part, is because insurance policies are to high for many to afford. Not only does this lead to undiagnosed medical conditions but also, in many cases, bankruptcy for those who have a serious medical condition and are uninsured.

With that said Obama's plan has been called a form of socialism. I do not believe it is. His plan allows you to keep whatever insurance you currently have, or buy into a more affordable national policy.

The most important issue here is that we look at the entirety of the situation, there are some things Obama believes that I simply do not, the same goes for McCain. I simply believe that Obama is more able to relate and react to the problems we are facing now and will face in the future. You may believe different, that is fine.

Lastly, I don't care who you are voting for, just vote. or don't... (video)

There seems to be some possible issues with some of my sources as far as the abortion rate and Bush. Here is a comment someone sent me

Which stats are correct Im not sure. One set says they are up 17% under Bush, the other says they are declining but no where near the rate they were while Clinton was in office. If you guys have anymore info on these stats please do email me.

How Sick Of Politics Are You?

This is be the second to last post on politics you have to read I promise. But, really no matter which candidate you are endorsing, how sick of politics are you?

I know I am sick of politics.

Im sick of the fact that people cant get along just because they have differing views.

Im sick of the fact that people jeopardize relationships because of disagreements.

Im sick of the fact that both parties lie.

Im sick of the fact that people are quick to condemn.

Im sick of people that think you have to support one candidate over the other if you are a Christan.

Most of all Im sick of the bickering.

I am all for open conversation, I have had a lot of them. I have a lot of friends that have different views than me, we talk about them and sometimes I persuade them other times they persuade me, and Im ok with that. What im not ok with is people fighting all the time.

The division we see between Liberals and Conservatives is half the problem. We need to stop fighting all the time and start moving forward.

What are you sick of?

If Anyone Cares, This is Worth A Read

This is an inspiring read. It's a story from a Norwegian newspaper that a person on blogger translated. Here is a link to the translated page.

Mary lacked money to fly home to Norway – he saved her love

ÅSGÅRDSTRAND (VG): Mary was a newlywed and ready to move to Norway, but was stopped at the airport because she didn’t have enough money for the trip. Then a stranger turned up and paid for her.

Mary Menth Andersen was 31 years old at the time and had just married Norwegian Dag Andersen. She was looking forward to starting a new life in Åsgårdstrand in Vestfold with him. But first she had to get all of her belongings across to Norway. The date was November 2nd, 1988.
At the airport in Miami things were hectic as usual, with long lines at the check-in counters. When it was finally Mary’s turn and she had placed her luggage on the baggage line, she got the message that would crush her bubbling feeling of happiness.
-You’ll have to pay a 103 dollar surcharge if you want to bring both those suitcases to Norway, the man behind the counter said.
Mary had no money. Her new husband had travelled ahead of her to Norway, and she had no one else to call.
-I was completely desperate and tried to think which of my things I could manage without. But I had already made such a careful selection of my most prized possessions, says Mary.

Although she explained the situation to the man behind the counter, he showed no signs of mercy.
-I started to cry, tears were pouring down my face and I had no idea what to do. Then I heard a gentle and friendly voice behind me saying, That’s OK, I’ll pay for her.
Mary turned around to see a tall man whom she had never seen before.
-He had a gentle and kind voice that was still firm and decisive. The first thing I thought was, Who is this man?
Although this happened 20 years ago, Mary still remembers the authority that radiated from the man.
-He was nicely dressed, fashionably dressed with brown leather shoes, a cotton shirt open at the throat and khaki pants, says Mary.
She was thrilled to be able to bring both her suitcases to Norway and assured the stranger that he would get his money back. The man wrote his name and address on a piece of paper that he gave to Mary. She thanked him repeatedly. When she finally walked off towards the security checkpoint, he waved goodbye to her.

The piece of paper said ‘Barack Obama’ and his address in Kansas, which is the state where his mother comes from. Mary carried the slip of paper around in her wallet for years, before it was thrown out.
-He was my knight in shining armor, says Mary, smiling.
She paid the 103 dollars back to Obama the day after she arrived in Norway. At that time he had just finished his job as a poorly paid community worker* in Chicago, and had started his law studies at prestigious Harvard university.
In the spring of 2006 Mary’s parents had heard that Obama was considering a run for president, but that he had still not decided. They chose to write a letter in which they told him that he would receive their votes. At the same time, they thanked Obama for helping their daughter 18 years earlier.
In a letter to Mary’s parents dated May 4th, 2006 and stamped ‘United States Senate, Washington DC’, Barack Obama writes**:
‘I want to thank you for the lovely things you wrote about me and for reminding me of what happened at Miami airport. I’m happy I could help back then, and I’m delighted to hear that your daughter is happy in Norway. Please send her my best wishes. Sincerely, Barack Obama, United States senator’.
The parents sent the letter on to Mary.

This week VG met her and her husband in the café that she runs with her friend Lisbeth Tollefsrud in Åsgårdstrand.
-It’s amazing to think that the man who helped me 20 years ago may now become the next US president, says Mary delightedly.
She has already voted for Obama. She recently donated 100 dollars to his campaign.
She often tells the story from Miami airport, both when race issues are raised and when the conversation turns to the presidential elections.
-I sincerely hope the Americans will see reason and understand that Obama means change, says Mary.

Emerging Church

A friend asked me to post about my emerging Church class and what it is like taking it is Southern Missouri. So I decided that I would, because it is interesting at times to say the least.

The professor, Steve Smallwood, Pastored New Life Church in Springfield, he was also a director for Teen Challenge, among many other things (you can see his professional profile if you click his name).

As far as course content goes we are reading a couple books, the First being "Vintage Faith" by Dan Kimball. The second "Church Re-Imagined: The Spiritual Formation of People in Communities of Faith" By Doug Padgitt . If you haven't read these books pick them up...

For the most part the class was set up to inform about the Emergent movement, if you want to call it that. The first couple weeks were addressing the differences between the modern movement, and the post modern movement. Further than that the transition of thinking from modernism to post modernism.

To expound a bit, we have been talking specifically about, the house Church movement, third place thinking, faith communities as opposed to traditional Churches, as well as the various types of "Emerging Churches" that are popping up.

As far as the location of the class, it is interesting because there are a lot of really conservative kids in the class that like to combat some of the ideas. It makes for a good time. For the rest of the students in the class I think it is mainly putting names to the ideas they already had.

For me it has been fun because I have already read both the books and thought through most of this stuff so I am able to take it all in, and really get an idea about what other people think.

Thats about all I have to say about that...

If you guys have any specific questions about anything regarding this ask!

Church Transition

I suppose its time to let the cat out of the bag so to say. Last night we announced that we would be making a transition from Hope Community Church, where we have been really involved for the last 3 years to a Church across town called Milestone.

I have to say that this is the most difficult decision we have ever had to make in my life. Even harder than packing up and moving to Springfield MO from Susanville CA.

Its really funny because it was really easy to talk about until the time came. Last night made it real, before that it haddent really sunk yet. I had full intentions of announcing it myself to all the kids (I thought I could remain composure, right), but when the leaders meeting came around I could barely get words out. It was the ugliest cry I have experienced in quite some time. Even now as I sit in the coffee shop Im tearing up.

Its hard to put into words how much I will miss being a part of theBurn and Hope as a whole. Over the last three years we have been though some hard times and some good times. Made a lot of really good friends and lost some all at the same time. The people we have met at Hope and the friendships we have built will last much longer than this single chapter in our lives, but at the same time stepping our of the norm hurts.

I have learned a lot from Justin and the way he handles things. He is a great role model for anyone to emulate, I consider him one of my very best fiends. He loves students and has a passion for seeing their lives changed for the better. I am very blessed to have been able to serve with him. This goes many of the leaders at theBurn who have put up with me over these last few years. The friendships that have been built will continue.

I pray that as we close this tiny chapter in our life that Amanda and I's hearts for the students of theBurn, and this city will extend much farther than our departure from Hope.

As for the students, I have learned so much about life from their struggles and successes. Some of them I have watched grow up (it seems that way at least). I can truly say that the idea of not seeing them every week breaks my heart. At the same time I am proud to say that I believe God is going to use my family and I in a unique way elsewhere.

A little about where we are going. The Church is called Milestone (see the link up top) it is about 5 weeks old and meets in a school gym. As of now there are a lot of stuff in the works that I plan on being a big part of. I am praying that this was the right choice for my family. I really feel like it is and so does Amanda (that counts for something right).

To all my friends at Hope and theBurn, you have made an impact on not just my life, but my wife and kids as well. You are all outstanding role models for my children to look up to. I cannot exaggerate the impact you have all made on my life. I am a MUCH better person for having known all of you. I look forward to continued friendships even in our departure. You will allways be like family to me.

Today Is A Milestone For My Blog!!

This is the 101st blog. Since march I have posted 100 times on various topics. Some would say it was a waste of time, but I say they are stupid. I have met a bunch of new freinds though my blogging community and am looking forward to making more.

Here are some site stats. As of now, the highest hit count in one day was 67, the average daily unique visitor count is 23. I would say for a blog that has only been around six months that is good!

I am looking forward to keeping this going as long as people care to listen to what I have to say. Tell your friends im here to stay...

If you frequent this blog and have one of your own post a link, I want to know who you are!

Maybe it's just me, but this Hannah Montana Bear is creepy.

I dont think I would allow this in my house. It might try to kill me as I sleep.

Some Things I've Noticed

The Republicans seem to be really hostile this year.

The Republicans seem to be twisting a lot of words around.

The Republicans seem to be talking a lot about experience.

Then they pick a VP Candidate who was a city council member, and mayor in a town of about 7,000; then became Governor of a state with a population less than 700,000.

The Republican VP Candidate has no Washington experience.

For a party who has been ragging on Obama for a lack of "experience" you would think they would choose someone who was...

Maybe its just me but being the governor of the smallest state in the union dosen't equal Presidential status experience.

But like I said maybe its just me...

If I Ever Plant a Church...

im getting these guys...

Wow, I Have Been Busy.

These last couple weeks have been crazy... I started a new Job, school, and im still trying to get used to the whole two kid thing now. I promise I will be back soon:) lots to talk about just so time to talk.

My Son Is a Genious...

Most people wouldn't expect a 14 month old child to beable to make phone calls and hold a conversation but mine sure can.

Last night I got home from playing football with theBurn guys and I got a phone call. Caller ID said "Amanda Joy" so I picked up and said my usall "hello" and I hear "Da da da da da da hahah hi hi hi da da ha" So I starting talking and he is listening then proceeds with some more Da Da's and I eventuly say bye and hang up.

About 15 minutes later I get another phone call. "Da da da da ha ha hi hi" So I talk to him some more and then finally say "Levi go give the phone to mommy" I hear a pitterpatter of baby feet then "OwWwWwW!!! Levi we dont hit mommy with her phone, that is a no no". Anyway she didn't realize I was on the other line so she just told him to go play.

At this point im like what the crap, I thought Amanda was calling me and giving him the phone but that wasnt the case. So im like did my 1 year old really manage to call me not only once but twice, and did he really just go give her the phone?

I hang up again

A short time later phone rings again

ME: hello
Amanda: Hey I am on my way home I will be there soon.
Me: Did you know Levi has been calling me for the last hour.
Amanda: What?
Me: Yeah he called me twice and the second time I told him to give you the phone and he hit you with it, then you proceeded to tell him not to hit people with the phone.
Amanda: Thats crazy, he was walking around with the phone to his ear saying Da Da but I thought he was just messing around.
Me: Nope he was talking to me.

My kid is a genius, that's all I have to say. If he can operate the Blackberry UI at 1 who knows what he can to at 2.

Oh on top of this he figured out how to unlock my iPhone and get to the "Bub" game that I downloaded for him...

So if you ever think your kid is smart remember this, Mine is much smarter than yours :)

You know that one song...

I have heard this a TON over the last few months.

It turns out that the song "Healer" by planetshakers pastor Michael Guglielmucci was a fake. At least his story about fighting with a terminal case of cancer. You can see the newspaper articale here, but the gist of it is he lied about having cancer.

The big thing here is we need to be praying for him, his family, and those who are being affected my the lies. The paper said that he even lied to his family about it.

Now with that said, the thing that really makes me laugh about this whole situation is the fact that people think they need to make stuff up to compensate for God, as if he cant make stuff happen by himself. Because we all know that God isn't capable of doing stuff on his own...

The thing that we can hold to is that God will move even when the messenger is corrupt. There are countless people that have been touched by this song and his ministry dispite his short comings. So, before you get mad about this recognize that the LORD is moving though this song, even though it was written by a not so perfect man.

Who would have guessed right?

Do You Ever Feel Really Old?

Lately it seems as if I feel this way a lot more than usual. I was watching Nick at Night a few days ago and an add came on saying something to the effect of "Nick at Night your stop for TV classics".

I dont know if you watch Nick at Night but for the most part it shows Saved by the Bell and Fresh Prince. I remember watching Saved by the Bell every morning before school, and Fresh Prince every afternoon. Since when did those shows become classics. To me classics are I Love Lucy, Mork and Mindy, The Jeffersons, and Threes Company. Not The shows I grew up watching...

Do You Ever Feel Small?

I feel small all the time.
When I stand next to someone who is taller than me.
When I am next to a tree.
When Im standing under a really tall building.
When I look up into the sky.
Then I see Pictures like this"

And I feel really small.

This is that tadpole galaxy it is about 420 million light years away from earth and 390 million light years across, this galaxy is nearly 4 times the size of our own. If you want to feel even smaller think about the fact that there are innumerable amounts of galaxies just like this one in the universe.

Its amazing how creation can bring the reality of everything right to the forefront. I don't know about you but when I look into the chaos of space and realize that our little solar system in our little galaxy does not even come close to the vastness of God's creation I feel humble. I am just a speck in the forever growing universe. Heck our galaxy is just a speck, that makes me a speck of a speck of a speck or something like that.

The coolest thing about it is that all creation was made to glorify the father. From the debts the the universe creation is screaming out HIS name. Because HIS words are written in the heavens...

God's glory is on tour in the skies,
God-craft on exhibit across the horizon.
Madame Day holds classes every morning,
Professor Night lectures each evening.

Their words aren't heard,
their voices aren't recorded,
But their silence fills the earth:
unspoken truth is spoken everywhere.

God makes a huge dome
for the sun—a superdome!
The morning sun's a new husband
leaping from his honeymoon bed,
The daybreaking sun an athlete
racing to the tape.

That's how God's Word vaults across the skies
from sunrise to sunset,
Melting ice, scorching deserts,

I Almost Forgot.

While we were in Colorado I got the chance to check out some of the wind towers up close. If we would have had more time I could have climbed up into one of them to see how everything works. My dad got that chance a few months back he said it was impressive.

It is really cool to see states taking steps to move away from dependency on fossil fuels and into more sustainable and renewable options.

Here are some pictures of the turbines. The noise they make when you are right under them is crazy its like you are going to be wooshed away.

When was the last time you read?

I was thinking about it but I haven't read a book in awhile. There for bit I was reading 2-3 books a month no issue. Now I have like 4 that I am trying to finish (see "what im reading"). I dont know what the deal is.

When was the last time you read?

Flat Tires Suck Harder Than a Dyson...

Most of you know we went to Colorado to visit my Family, all in all we had a great time.

We went swimming a lot, hung out with my little brothers, ate a lot of good food (and some not so good food), We had a great time though. It was good to see Levi interact with my little brothers, he had a hoot.

We went to Denver on Saturday and ate at this place called Casa Bonita If you are ever in Denver dont go there it was the grossest food I have ever eaten. All though as some friends have pointed out the Sopapias are good. The entertainment isn't that great either, plus the place smells like a dirty indoor pool.

The crappy thing is that on the way home we hit this,

Which in turn made this happen,

Not to mention it was like 110 over the cement. So Here I am laying on one of the kids blankets trying to change a tires while sweat pours off of me. Not a good time.

We made it home (obviously) but the tire was not repairable so we had to buy two new ones ($170.00), and I have to buy two more next month or my other tires will pop.

It was great to visit the Fam but not so great to get a flat.

Here is to the guy that lost the foot long nail on the highway and cost me 400 bucks...

This is What Happens When Im in the Car For 10 Hours...

You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
You'd be like Heaven to touch.
I wanna hold you so much.

Me after a long drive-

You smell to good to be poo.
Cant take my eyes off of you.
you'd be like Heaven to Munch.
I want to eat you so much.

If you could have seen my wife's face...

More on the trip tomorrow.

P.S. Sorry Frankie.

Small Towns and Big Towns.

Tuesday night we stopped in a small town called Grand Island, It is Nebraska population is about 30,000 or so. We stayed the night there so we could split the trip to Colorado up some.

Yesterday morning while we were at breakfast I noticed something that I dont typically see in springfield. Everyone there was excessively nice. In the span of 45 minutes or however long it took us to finish eating, three people made comments about our family like: "Your children are great", "You have a perfect family", or "My goodness they are so adorable". Mind you this restaurant was not excessively busy there were probably only 15 people there.

So what is the point? The point is that in the busyness of large towns we have lost sight of community. When Amanda and I got to the car we were laughing because it seems as if in springfield or another large city a person would be more likely to ask you to shut your kid up than comment on how great they are.

Here is to keeping community even in big cities...

I Freaking Hate Corn...

We left today to go visit my Dad and Step mom and brothers in Colorado today. Drove for about 8 hours an now we are stopped at a hotel waiting for room service to bring my hamburger.

It was really interesting driving in the car that long with a 12 month old and a 3 week old. Levi was like a caged wild bore trying to get out, Luke was really good fussed every few hours but other than that he was great.

When we got to the hotel Levi was so excited to get out of his seat he started tweaking out and shaking his head back and forth. Now he is running around the room like a crackhead.

I will be posting this week, probably not the everyday norm but still often...

I hope you are all having a good week!

I Cut My Digit.

It hurts like crazy. I put some glue stuff on it but I think Im going to be missing half a finger tip...

It hurts... Its deep... Bad night...

When Was The Internet Created?

Some people amaze me. If you didnt know this already 999=911 in Europe...

Web 2.0 And You

If you don't know what I mean by Web 2.0 Click here. If you are two lazy to read the main thing you need to understand is that the internet is getting to be more community based.

I have been thinking a lot lately about the whole evolution of the internet in relation to the Church and how we work with individuals, other Churches, communities, and really the world. If you notice the Web has changed from a strictly information based organism to a community of people for all around the world joining in on each other lives.

Think about this, right now every one of you are a part of at least one social network, probably more than that. Whether it be Myspace, xanga, Facebook, twitter, or whatever else you are a part of a web based community. Right now I can think of about 10 different web communities that I am a part of. Some of them are forums where people from all around the globe get together and talk about theological stuff. Others people talking about sustainability and green living. It seems like there is a niche for everyone in the Web 2.0 world we live in.

Not only are we fully plugged into the world via our computers. Everything we could only do on our computer a few short years ago we can now do from our phones. This generation more than any other has the opportunity to be connected with people from different geological locations, religions, ethnicitys and so on.

So what is the point? Why does it matter that we have the opportunity to be so connected? There are a few reasons.

The first reason is that it give people a whole new arena to experience life. Think about it, there are actuality places on the web where people go and literally live a second life. Its a place where people go and experience community, only its over some wires that stretch all around the world. There are Churches that are strictly online, and others like that have both online campuses and actual physical campuses.

The second reason it is important is that web 2.0 allows for total transparency in peoples lives. It allows others to experience life with people they do not even know. Example, some of you reading this right now have never met me or my family, but you, though pictures, experienced the birth of our second son. On top of the fact that it allows for us to experience life with each other. One of my main goals is to change the view that the a lot of non Church people have on towards Church people. Anyone reading this can tell that I am just a normal guy working though life, trying to figure stuff out just like everyone else.

The last reason I want to talk about is this: Web 2.0 allows us as Christians to meet and address needs not only in our physical communities but also our digital communities. Another blogger that I read a lot did a live prayer session over the web. During this time he prayed for needs that his readers had sent in over the course of the day by the time her started praying there was 93 request. You can view his blog here. Another really cool aspect of this is that because we have the ability to reach literally everyone with an internet connection things like To Write Love on Her Arms, The One Campaign, or any other cause you feel like naming have a chance to get rolling and needs can be addressed. I am not saying that those are Christan organizations I am just using them as an example.

I have spent enough of your time, this is a really long post but it is something to think about. The time in which we live is like no other, as a body of believers we have an opportunity like no other generation before us to spread the Gospel in a authentic and transparent way should we choose to.

If you have had an experience with where a online community helped you out or you noticed needs being met by one I would be curious to know about it. Comment or email me!

Why I Hate and Love Apple All At The Same Time.

If you know me at all you know I love macs and everything about them. From the user interface to the sheer classiness of their look. But, the more and more I realize I really dig Apple's products the more and more I realize I hate Apple.

I have been using macs and apple products for a few years now and I am starting to notice some things that really irk me.

The main one is the fact that whenever they upgrade something you have to get a whole new everything to fit it. Im not talking about software or the way their products work because all that is great. But you have to buy new cases, docks, headphones and whatever else.

Example: The iPhone 3g does not come with a dock, ok cool I will just use my 2gs dock... Oh, it dosent fit!!! I hate you Apple. So now most people go and buy another 30 dollar, nice packaged, shinny piece of plastic.

Not this time Steve. You can call me a dork, but I just spent 45 Minutes sanding and cutting down my iPhone 2g dock so my 3g fits in it. Eat that Apple...

Life Lesson #1

I will be doing these Life Lessons from time to time, whenever I do something totally stupid and I think you all can learn from it. Other times maybe I will learn something really cool and feel the need to share it. This time I just did something stupid.

Life Lesson #1-
Never eat sushi from the mall...

If you are anything like me you enjoy some raw fish from time to time. It is a great tasting and healthy little snack. However, as great tasting as raw tuna can be, when it is wrapped up in seaweed, yummy rice, and assorted veggies when that wrapped tuna is no good it is a bad day... I ate this stuff last Thursday and I am finally returning to normal. So learn from my mistake don't eat sushi from the mall. And if you absolutely feel the need to don't choose actual fish, get some of that imitation crab stuff and not real fish.

What is the Church?

This past Friday while waiting in line at the ATT store for the new iPhone I struck up a conversation with one of the other guys that was in line as well.

I had noticed he was reading a book so I asked him what it was and it turns out it was The Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne(links to Amazon and Wikipedia). If you haven't read this book you should as it is a nice, short, good read. Anyway, we talked about the book for awhile then we started talking about the way we see the community of God working and the way it should be working.

One of the big issues I brought up was the fact that we do so much for people in the Church but we neglect our neighbor right next door. It seems like we see needs inside the Church and around the world but our neighbor next door is struggling to put dinner on the table. I think to fully understand the totality of the situation we need to look at the book of Acts. In the book of Acts the Church did something revolutionary. I am not saying we should do it today because in our society something like this would not work.

In acts chapter 4 Luke writes, "All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. 34 There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet."

There are a couple things we have to understand about this passage. First, the Church did not keep all that money to themselves, they used it to meet needs in the community, such as taking care of the needy, widows, and funding missionary journeys. I feel the need to further emphasize the face that I am not advocating selling all your stuff and giving it to the Church. That sort of thing does not fly in today's society, but what I am saying is this. If you are driving a Lexus and your neighbor has no food to eat we have a problem.

America has moved away from this place of community where people simply take care of each other in times of need, and moved into this area where we are all about getting ours, making a way for us, driving nice cars, and owning big houses.

I think the heart of the gospel is people helping people. Its not just about "getting saved", yes that is part of it, but that isn't all of it. I would argue that it is fairly low on the totem pole. It is what we do after we recognized our need for Christ. I am not saying that we are saved by what we do, that would be contrary to scripture, but I am saying if we are saved it will change what we do...

Now that I have taken 10 minutes of your time I will let you go with this:

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." James 1:27.

The Evolution of Family

Its funny how quickly things can change in a family. Im not just talking about my direct family as in Amanda and I, but family as a whole.

Yesterday we were talking about how not long ago it was just my Dad and I in my direct family. It has only been 6ish years since it was just the two of us, and now its Dad, Michelle, Jacob, Andrew, Me, Amanda, Levi, and Luke. All this in a period of 6ish years.

If you would have asked me 6 short years ago if at this point in time my Dad would be remarried with two kids and I would have two kids of my own I would have said there is no way. But It happened and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love my Wife, I Love my Kids, and I love my Dad, Step mom, and little bros.

It is weird to think about the fact that in 6 years my Dad and I have successfully added 6 people to our immediate family.

Here is to marriage and pro creation!

Downside- we don't all fit into one car anymore...

It Feels Good To Be Home.

We made it! We are all home and doing great. Levi is asleep and Amanda and I are going to eat then sleep. I will take some more pictures tonight and post them.

Levi really dosen't seem to care to much about Luke yet. I was holding Luke and Levi snuggled up to me and then patted Luke on the head so that is a start.

I hope you all enjoyed keeping up with the happenings this weekend!

We Are On The Way Home

As I type I am in the car on the way to get Levi we were discharged about an hour ago. Yay for being home
